The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra returns with a full year of exciting concerts and celebrates its 50th Anniversary year, kicking off celebrations with Fiftieth Anniversary Pictures on Saturday 12 March at 7pm.
The KPO begins its 50th anniversary year with a salute to mature mastery, outstanding talent and enduring friendships. Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Haveron makes his first appearance as a soloist with the KPO to perform one of the most famous concertos in the repertoire. Brahms’s monumental Violin Concerto is loved by audiences for its magnificent themes and powerful emotions, and for the lively Hungarian flavour of its finale.
Given full expression in Maurice Ravel’s striking orchestration, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by a memorial display of genre paintings by his late friend and creative ally, Viktor Hartmann. Portraying a delightful range of characters and scenes, the movements are united by the memorable Promenades which convey the listener expectantly from one group of pictures to the next.
With its slick, glassy surfaces, Carl Vine’s Microsymphony presents us with an image of the modern city, energised by the rhythms of machines. Commissioned by the Sydney Youth Orchestra, this dynamic work typifies Vine’s considerable contribution to Australian music as a composer and educator, and KPO’s deep commitment to performing and nurturing Australian repertoire.
Artistic Director & Conductor Paul Terracini says ‘”Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which he completed in 1922, made a triumphant entrance into the orchestral repertoire and has been a favourite amongst musicians and audiences ever since. Ravel brilliantly brings to life Mussorgsky’s piano music in this exhilarating work”

“KPO’s 2022 season is a musical banquet par excellence with brilliant Australian soloists such as Roger Woodward and Andrew Haveron, orchestral masterworks such as Pictures at an Exhibition and Bolero, a film music extravaganza, and the prestigious KPO Concerto Competition”.
