ACO Underground at Oxford Art Factory

by | Sep 30, 2013 | Ambassador thoughts

Last night was my first experience of electro-acoustic collective ACO Underground and it was a great night of entertainment.

They’re members of Australian Chamber Orchestra, guitarist Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) and bass guitarist Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes).

They were making their Oxford Art Factory debut.

It was an eclectic gig with a mesh of music featuring reimagined and new works… [list type=’arrow’]

  • NICK DRAKE They’re Leaving Me Behind
  • GEORGE CRUMB Black Angels (excerpts)
  • NINE INCH NAILS Something I Can Never Have
  • VINCENT YOUMANS Tea for Two
  • PETE SEEGER Where Have All the Flowers Gone
  • RICHARD TOGNETTI Sea Drift
  • STRAVINSKY Three pieces for String Quartet: Dance
  • PHIL SPECTOR Spanish Harlem
  • ANTHONY PATERAS An Island off an Island off an Island
  • HAAS String Quartet No.2 “From the Monkey Mountains” (excerpt)
  • SAARIAHO …de la Terre (excerpt)
  • RICHARD TOGNETTI Mosh Maggot
  • VIVALDI Four Seasons: Summer: Presto

Hearing electro-acoustic Vivaldi with rock style lighting gave a whole new perspective to it, which my electronic music listening roots loved.

Musicians being introduced during a gig is wonderfully connecting to the audience and something I wish more traditional classical concerts adopted more regularly.

Other than excellent music it combined a few other favourite activities… I could drink beer while listening to music live, I could move without being death stared by someone else in the audience, I could quietly ask my friend if he wanted another round mid-song and go to the bar…

Enjoy the photo gallery above!

If you enjoy a fun night out of great music with friends, I highly recommend ACO Underground.

About The Author

Kate Tribe

Kate’s passion for classical music was fostered by her friendship with her grandfather, Ken Tribe. What he did so well to share his passion was to impart a new piece of information each time they went to a concert together and to encourage gradual knowledge building about one of the things closest to his heart. When not working with classikON she is, cross stitching or watching cricket.
