Australia Quartet’s Transfigured Night was a night of celebration

by | Nov 4, 2013 | Ambassador thoughts

Australia Quartet celebrated Halloween with Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (‘Transfigured Night’), Schumann’s beloved Piano Quartet and Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin’s irresistible work, ‘Scherzino’.

The night had quite a celebratory feel which was wonderful – and there was much to celebrate.

  • It was Australia Quartet’s first performance in the Utzon Room at the Opera House.
  • Elena Kats-Chernin joined Australia Quartet on stage to perform her work Scherzino with Tamara-Anna Cislowska. I really enjoy hearing works with piano four hands. Pianists also seem to enjoy performing them! It was also the first time I’d heard four hands with strings. The image on left is Tamara introducing Elena.
  • Chancellor Professor Vicki Sara announced UTS will continue to support Australia Quartet as their ensemble in residence with an expanded program in 2014 and exciting collaborations. We’re looking forward to finding out more of what they have planned and sharing that with you. The image on the right is the announcement being made.
  • Elena had created signed artworks of her compositions and the sale of them is going towards supporting the NSW bushfire victims.

I enjoyed all the performances and the energy in which they performed them. For me there wasn’t a stand out performance as they all had something special.
