A Concert Celebrating French and English Masterpieces
The Early Music Collective Sydney is thrilled to present The United Tastes of the Baroque, a concert that transports audiences to the rich musical landscapes of 17th and 18th-century France and England. This evening of Baroque splendour will feature works by some of the era’s most celebrated composers, including François Couperin, Henry Purcell, and Marin Marais.
The program begins with Couperin’s Huitième Concert from Les Goûts Réunis (The United Tastes), a collection of theatrical pieces and dances that showcase the merging of French and Italian Baroque styles. This will be followed by a selection of airs, sung by soprano Josie Ryan, by Couperin and Purcell, highlighting Purcell’s genius in adapting the French style.
The concert will culminate in two exquisite works by one of the most important musicians at Louis XIV’s court, the viola da gamba player, Marin Marais. Audiences will be treated to a stunning solo performance on the viola da gamba from Marais’s third Pièces de viole, performed by viola da gamba virtuoso Shaun Ng on his antique instrument. The evening will conclude with the majestic Chaconne from Marais’s Pièces en trio, a testament to the grandeur and emotional depth of the French Baroque.
