DUKAS – Fanfare to La Péri
HAYDN – Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major
SCHUBERT – Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished)
Paul Dukas’ Fanfare to La Péri is a dazzling brass showpiece, composed in 1912 as the dramatic prelude to his ballet La Péri. Written for an ensemble of brass instruments, the fanfare’s bold melodies and stately rhythms set the stage for the concert.
The orchestra will welcome solist Bruce Hellmers to the stage to perform Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major. A beloved staple of the trumpet repertoire, it was composed in 1796 for his friend Anton Weidinger, who had developed a keyed trumpet capable of playing chromatic notes. The concerto showcases the instrument’s expanded range and agility, trumpet abilities unheard of at that point in time.
Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor, famously known as the “Unfinished Symphony,” is one of classical music’s great enigmas. Composed in 1822, it consists of only two completed movements, yet those movements capture a depth of emotion and lyrical beauty that rivals the most complete symphonies. Can you solve the mystery as to why Schubert left the work unfinished?
