Four Winds Festival | A Celebration of Life

by | Feb 23, 2021 | Festivals, Groups

After a tough twelve months which included the cancellation of the iconic Four Winds 2020 festival on the south coast of NSW, we are again ready to celebrate and reconnect – with music, with each other, with nature.

Under the creative direction of Lindy Hume, this year’s festival will be a multi-arts festival with music at its heart, including a completely free day for all, at the Barragga Bay bush site, which houses the stunning Windsong Pavilion and Sound Shell stage in natural surrounds.

The program reveals some new adventures for Four Winds, and welcomes some of Australia’s most brilliant artists to the Sound Shell stage, including a sensational swathe of South Coast locals.

The Goldner String Quartet, the Baroque sounds of the Muffat Collective, vibrant pianist Stefan Cassomenos, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows, members of the ACO and many others will be joined by their peers in contemporary dance, theatre, contemporary and popular music. Audiences will experience the voices of Lior, The New Graces, Lou Bennett, Heath Cullen, Indigenous guests Kyarna Rose, Matty Walker,  Gabadoo and our koori choir Djinama Yilaga, and other genres including film-making and poetry/spoken word There is even a cocktail lounge, where ABC’s Graham Abbott will hold court in the late afternoons.

Four Winds Festival

For a completely FREE opening day, on Friday 2nd April, Yuin artists join the musician-storytellers of Candelo for a joyous all-in celebration of the music, dance, language and cultures of this place.

Local actor/director William Zappa’s 3-part re-working of Homer’s epic The Iliad Out Loud has earned standing ovations at Sydney and Adelaide Festivals. Over three sunset performances at Four Winds, Zappa and his team of actors and musicians will tell Homer’s millennia-old tale of war and destiny. Zappa says “I’m very excited to bring this great story to Four Winds. The venue is about as close to an ancient  Greek theatre as we are likely to experience in these COVID-19 times. Can’t wait!”

The Illiad Out Loud 1

An exciting addition to the Sound Shell program this year will be a visit from Australia’s beloved Sydney Dance Company. We’ll be astonished by the physicality and power of the extraordinary athlete-artists, performing Rafael Bonachela’s Cinco with live music from a string quartet of Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows.

A further program highlight is Compassion, Nigel Westlake’s stunning collaboration with singer Lior. Compassion is, as Hume says, “simply a work we all need to hear now. Its gorgeous music and Hebrew/Arabic text appeals to our human grace and connectedness.”

Another reason to celebrate? Four Winds chalks up its 21st anniversary festival this year!

The whole festival experience will be enhanced by the Four Winds legendary hospitality, local food and refreshments. Four Winds are looking forward to welcoming you to celebrate and to reconnect safely and joyously.
