Monthly BYO-café-style gigs in Kempsey

The HOT CLUB organisers make solid efforts to import out-of-town talent to their regular, monthly, BYO-café-style evenings at the Oddfellows Club Hall, at 22 Kemp Street, Kempsey.
Focusing their search on jazz, blues, fusion and funk performers, they were ecstatic to be able to advertise Sydney-based outfit, Funk Engine, for their May 9th evening’s entertainment.

Funk Engine in their third year are tight playing with ripping talent

Formed only in January 2013, bass guitarist Siebe Pogson was joined by tenor sax Nish Manjanuth, drummer Holly Conner, and electric guitarist Felix Lalanne, all of whom were studing jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium. On this gig, Felix was sadly unavailable, so his place was ably taken by Yutaro Okuda, a friend and fellow student of the band’s members.

They have served their time at the Con well, as evidenced by their tight playing and ripping talent, with principal composer Pogson’s pieces providing ample opportunity for each musician to shine with at least one solo for guitar, sax, drums or bass in each piece.

Performing and recording works composed by bass guitarist, Siebe Pogson

Pogson’s compositions show traditional jazz/funk influences, with a heavy bass rhythm forming the backbone of most of the works, but with reggae influences on several of the compositions.

If you are into toe-tapping funk, or are curious to see what the Sydney Con is producing these days in the way of talented musos, get along to see these guys.

If this is not readily possible, you can see video of them and listen to a couple of tracks on their website, youtube and facebook (these are on their classikON profile).

Released only in November of 2014, mixed by Nick Franklin at Linear Studios, Leichhardt and mastered by Andy Busuttil and Greg Seiler at Blue Mountain Sound, it features eight tracks composed by Pogson that indicate a bright future for this group of young musicians.
