Acacia Quartet with Jane Sheldon: North + South

by | Jun 5, 2013 | Ambassador thoughts

North + South is an eclectic collection of ten folk songs covering the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the globe. So we have Australian, English and Irish folksongs and some interesting arrangements by Benjamin Britain and avant garde composer Luciano Berio. Classic folksongs such as ‘I Wonder as I Wander’ are mixed with The Dying Stockman and the Plains of Emu – more evocative than the train station of that name.

They are all sung and some are arranged by Sydney born Jane Sheldon. Her voice is very pure and suited to many of the haunting melodies that are on this disc. If you like this sort of folk song then this is a disc for you; if you’re like me and want the haunting ones mixed up with some faster more rumbustious ones then I think you would get tired of the disc.

Jane is accompanied with great sensitivity by the Sydney based Acacia Quartet and Genevieve Lang on Harp.

Find out more about Acacia Quartet. They’re performing works from the CD on June 14 at Sydney Philharmonia Rehearsal Room and June 15 at Mosman Art Gallery.
