Saturday’s Sirius Chamber Ensemble concert was filled with lovely music in the beautiful St Philips Church near Wynyard.
I’ve previously pondered what influences our enjoyment of a concert, and one of those factors was how well we know the musicians. Some musicians have great stage presence, are engaging, and excellent translators of the composers work… they blow your mind whether you know them or not, but they’re also rare.
I met the members of Sirius Chamber Ensemble last year and now go to each of their concerts. Knowing them has added to the listening experience. They’re not showy, just love to perform the music. It is wonderful to be able to sit back and just enjoy the music in a relaxed atmosphere with a friendly audience.
Their last concert was the best I’ve heard them perform and it has been wonderful to watch them grow as an ensemble.
They performed Robert Muczynski Time Pieces for clarinet & piano; Kenneth Ruchs Quiet in the Land, Idyll for flute cor anglais, clarinet, viola & cello; Astor Piazolla Grand Tango for cello & piano; Robert Muczynski Fantasy Trio for clarinet, cello & piano; and Julio Medaglia Suite Belle Epoque en Sud-America.
