The Australia Quartet are the UTS Piano Quartet in Residence and their 3rd concert was last night.
Personally, I like chamber music being performed in the kind of space the name represents:
The word “chamber” signifies that the music can be performed in a small room, often in a private salon with an intimate atmosphere.
The Bon Marche Studio is such a space, although designed for theatre rather than music, it has tiered seating so everyone could easily see, and the turnout resulted in two additional rows along the side of the quartet. Intimate settings like this make the concert feel much more special, especially when the musicians talk to the audience between the music and seem to enjoy it!
The 100 or so audience were treated to a wonderful performance of Ross Edwards‘ Emerald Crossing and it was fabulous that he was there to hear it. I’ve enjoyed every Edwards I’ve heard. They are always a wonderful journey in sound with an Australian influence.
Their concerts are by donation only and we were treated to Mudgee wine afterwards. The musicians and Ross Edwards joined the audience for a drink, which was wonderful.
