WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO | This series, introduced in our classikON What’s ON (subscribe here), shares our Ambassadors thoughts at this time. They are voices of the audience, with a range of knowledge and history with music, for some music is their life and others it is an escape from their life.

What we've been up to

I feel very lucky and blessed to have seen, sketched and write about, what was possibly one of the last concerts in Sydney for a while – Enigma Quartet at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.

From our busy schedule of juggling concerts, choral rehearsals and performances (we were going to sing the Faure Requiem on Good Friday), art exhibitions and dinner parties, it was suddenly all gone! At least I still had Coogee beach (my studio) till, after too many crowds after a hot day, that was closed too. Luckily I had an alternative at the Northern Beaches (we have 2 homes) but from then on it was “swim and go”.

I have thus caught up with old projects, I had put aside. Done lots of cleaning and resorting. Doing paintings I had been dreaming about for years. To maintain my singing voice I do a daily screeching of both arias by the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte”. I can nearly hit that high F that occurs in both arias, but it will be a while before I make it to Carnegie Hall. My husband is very patient.

We are both well and staying connected with friends through Zoom “dinner parties”, Facebook and emails. Our daily swim at Coogee Beach usually results in meeting some of our beach friends.

One of the more tiresome things is washing the packages when we return from the supermarket!

About The Author

Heidi Hereth

Born in Augsburg, which boasts the family residence of Leoplod Mozart, Heidi grew up initially surrounded by classical music. Her father, a keen amateur chorister, always sang around the house and the news on radio was announced with the opening of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". Her family emigrated to Australia when she was seven. Music was still important in her family, but her main interest was in visual art. She trained as a Graphic Designer, although her passion was fine art. After a long career as an art director and teacher, she retired to pay full attention to art and music. She is a member of two choirs (Collegium Musicum UNSW; Eastern Sydney Chamber Choir) and goes to concerts very frequently. She sketches all aspects of her life, especially during concerts, where she can visually express her reaction to the music.
